The Indian energy giant Reliance Industries has announced a bid to buy a controlling stake in bankrupt petrochemicals firm LyondellBasell. Reports suggest the provisional offer is the region of $12bn (£7.2bn). If accepted, the deal would make Reliance, owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, one of the world’s largest petrochemical companies. News of the bid sent Indian shares higher, with the main BSE index climbing almost 1%. Reliance is India’s biggest company and Mr Ambani is the country’s richest man. A luxury sports car maker based in the Netherlands has announced it is moving an assembly plant to Coventry.

Spyker Cars makes up to 50 luxury cars a year, mainly for the US market, with prices starting from about £180,000.

It said up to 45 out of 135 jobs would be at risk when it moved its assembly plant from Zeewolde to Whitley, in Coventry, by the end of 2009.

Valero Energy has announced it is permanently shutting down its oil refining plant in Delaware City, with the loss of 550 jobs. US chocolate maker Hershey is considering launching a solo bid of at least $17bn (£10bn) for British firm Cadbury, according to reports. Under pressure from its charitable trust, Hershey has lined up funding from Bank of America and JP Morgan, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
