Copper prices hit a high as strike looms on China

The price of copper has reached a 16-month high with strike action looming at two copper mines in Chile.

Copper on the London Metal Exchange traded above $7,300 a tonne on Wednesday - its highest level since September 2008.

Investors expect demand for the metal to be strong in the new year.

There are also concerns that strike action at the two mines owned by Chile’s Codelco - the world’s largest copper producer - could affect supply.

Expectations of higher demand will add to the long rally in copper prices seen in 2009, analysts said.

Copper is now on course for an annual rise of about 140% - its biggest in more than 30 years.

Japanese Output Grows

Japan’s factory output rose for the ninth straight month in November, up 2.6% from October, as the manufacturing sector continued to recover.

The rise, which was higher than expected, came in response to growing overseas demand for Japanese goods.

Japan’s exports to the rest of Asia totalled 2.7 trillion yen ($30bn) in November, 4.7% up on October. It was the first rise in 14 months.

But domestic demand remained weak, as consumer spending fell again.

Retail sales were 1% lower in November than a year earlier, the 15th monthly fall in a row, as consumers continued to cut spending because of job market fears.

The power of Sampling

Ask any marketer and he moans that the advertisements which were once very powerful, are not powerful anymore. They will tell you that they are spending more and more money on reaching out to their consumers. They have to. Given the media fragmentation, it is simply impossible to predict where one’s consumer is going to be at any given point in time. The consumer may be watching television. She may be browsing on the net. She may be buying her groceries in the supermarket. She may be relaxing on the beach. She may be traveling, listening to music in her car. She may be doing a thousand different things.

Even if you manage to reach out to the consumer, you may not be able to catch her attention. There are a thousand different ads screaming at her for her attention. How do you ever break through the clutter? It is very difficult. So, irrespective of how much you spend, nothing seems to be happening to your brand.

However, one thing seems to work as well as ever before. And, that is sampling. You just sample your products. Then, the power of the products takes over. This works especially when there are makeup and cosmetics samples are involved.

Google’s Admob Deal Getting into Regulatory check

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has asked for more information about Google’s plans to buy Admob, a company specialising in ads for small screens.

The search engine giant said last month that it hoped to buy the Silicon Valley start-up for $750m (£449m) in stocks.

Google’s group product manager Paul Feng wrote in a blog post that the company “doesn’t see any regulatory issues” with the proposed deal.

He admitted that the scrutiny meant the deal would not be closed immediately.

It took months for the FTC to approve Google’s earlier purchase of another internet advert company, DoubleClick.

“Closer scrutiny has been one consequence of Google’s success,” added Mr Feng.

Admob was founded four years ago and sells adverts designed to run on mobile phones.

Get Rid of Your Piling Credit Problems

Lots of people live with lots of credit related problems. The only issue is that they don;t have to. They simply don’t know how to get rid of those problems. If they did, they can easily control their problems and get out of the crippling credit and loans issues.

The credit problem is a funny one. It works like this. Banks lend to you only if they are sure that you are capable of paying it back. However, they have to ensure that they get their money back. So, they will squeeze you till they are sure that you can pay. If they are not sure, they will try to take over your property. However, if they are not sure how much they can dispose your property for and if they are sure of getting at least some money if not all, chances are that they will come to a compromise.

That is the way to avoid the threatening bankruptcy problem.

That is where the MortgageDebtConsolidations comes in. They help you consolidate all your debts into one single debt. When you have one large debt, typically, you can negotiate a lower interest rate compared to the interest rates on the individual loans put together. You can even get a reduction in the loan amount. This helps you to get rid of your credit related problems.

Indians in Dubai Face Bleak Future

The impact of the global financial downturn has been felt keenly in the Middle Eastern emirate of Dubai - and that in turn is affecting the remote Indian village of Akhopur in the state of Bihar, from where Amarnath Tewary reports.

In August 2008, Bharat Bhushan Tiwari - from Akhopur village in eastern Indian Bihar - took a loan of 71,000 rupees ($1,500) from a village moneylender to pay a local agent who had arranged a job for his son in Dubai.

Mr Tiwari - who runs a small shop - was hoping for better days for his family of five by sending his second son, Jay Kumar Tiwari, to the Gulf country.

Jay Kumar had got a job as a carpenter in a Dubai-based construction company and had big dreams - he wanted to earn a lot of money to pull his family out of grinding poverty.

But last month, their dreams came crashing down when Jay Kumar was asked by the company officials to quit by 6 March 2010.
