Iran to Face out Defaced Banknotes

Iran’s central bank has said defaced banknotes are to be made invalid, after the appearance of opposition slogans on money, local media report.

They quote bank official Ebrahim Darvishi as saying that people possessing defaced banknotes should exchange them by 8 January.

It was difficult to distinguish genuine defaced notes from fakes, he added.

Messages in support of the opposition have been appearing on banknotes since June’s disputed presidential election.

Hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected in the poll - a move that triggered mass street protests by the opposition who claimed the election was rigged.

Twitter Buys Mixer Labs

The micro-blogging website Twitter is buying the location tracking start-up Mixer Labs for an undisclosed sum.

Mixer Labs, founded by two former Google employees, makes an application for Twitter called GeoAPI.

Twitter chief executive Evan Williams said the deal would allow Twitter users to show people where they are when they post updates to the site.

The application will also allow users to search where an event is happening, the firm said.

On the company’s blog, a statement said: “We want to know what’s happening, and more precisely, where is it happening.

“As a dramatic example, twittering ‘Earthquake!’ alone is not as informative as ‘Earthquake!’ coupled with your current location”.

Twitter is a social networking site in which users write messages of no more than 140 characters.

An estimated 58 million people use Twitter around the world.

US Healthcare Reform

US senators have passed the final Senate version of a historic healthcare reform bill.

The bill aims to cover 31m uninsured Americans and could lead to the biggest change in US healthcare in decades.

President Barack Obama welcomed it as offering “real and meaningful” reform, saying it was the most important piece of social legislation since the 1930s.

However, it must still be reconciled with more expansive legislation passed by the House of Representatives.

The process of reconciling the two bills is expected to begin in January and will require further tough negotiations.

Once that has been done - and the process could still be derailed by last-minute changes of heart among senators - Mr Obama will be able to sign the measure into law.

“We are now finally poised to deliver on the promise of real, meaningful health insurance reform,” the president said in a news conference following the Senate vote.

Crude oil surges to 77 dollars

The crude oil prices have once again surged by a massive 10% in the last few weeks, thanks to the strengthening dollar against all the other currencies coupled with sharp decline in crude oil stocks in US and other major countries. Also reports of a military skirmish between Iran and Iraq over a disputed oil field in their border area last week aided crude oil prices.
Overall we can expect crude oil prices to remain in the 65 to 85 dollars band for the next few months till clear signs of global economic recovery or decline are seen.

US Growth Rates Lower than estimated

The US economy grew by less than originally estimated between July and September, official figures show.

The latest estimate said the economy grew at an annual pace of 2.2%, down from the previous estimate of 2.8%. The first reading had shown growth of 3.5%.

It is the first quarter in which the US economy returned to growth, after four quarters of decline.

Separately, a report showed new home sales rose 7.4% in November, spurred on by government incentives.

The National Association of Realtors said sales rose to an annual rate of 6.5 million - the highest level in more than two years.

“This clearly is a rush of first-time buyers not wanting to miss out on the tax credit, but there are many more potential buyers who can enter the market in the months ahead,” said the National Association of Realtors’ chief economist Lawrence Yun.

The whole universe has only 5% of planets, stars, suns, moons and gases.

Astronomers are into a research and say that the universe is full of dark energy. This dark energy is composed of dark matter which affects the rate of universe expansions.

The dark matter also contains WIMPS (weakly interacting massive particles) which has the weight of the nuclei. The WIMPS never interacts with any matter. The dark matter in the universe is having a large amount of gravitational force which holds the universe together. Scientists are now detecting how this black matter helps in the structure of the universe.
