A radiation powerful than Xrays

Professor of Texas University, Alexey Belyanin has come out with terahertz. Terahertz radiation or THZ or t- rays are in the electromagnetic spectrum. THZ rays lay in-between microwave radiation and infrared radiation. The T-rays are more penetrating than x -rays and have no side effects. T-rays cameras can help us scan anything including suitcase, closed box and inside humans.

The capacity of t-rays to penetrate into opaque materials can make us unknown things visible. Unfortunately t-rays are difficult to produce due to unavailability of resources. The THZ technology application can be used in medicine, chemistry and other studies.

Weather Hits Hard; Shoppers Defy it

UK shoppers have defied the harsh winter weather to spend during the last weekend before the Christmas holidays.

The New West End Company, which represents more than 600 traders in central London, said sales were up 10% on last year’s sluggish trading.

“We estimate £140m to be spent over the weekend and we are looking to go over a million people,” it said.

Heavy snowfall has caused traffic chaos in many parts of the UK, and is expected to continue on Sunday.

Sales were reported to be brisk across the UK, while credit card firm Visa expects people to keep spending this week.

Visa expects to process a new record of more than 17 million transactions in the UK on 23 December, up 16% from the same day last year.

WildBlue Satellite Internet

Any new technology takes a bit of time to percolate and reach out widely. However, some technologies are exception to this rule. They seem to come and they seem to take on the imagination of the people immediately from the word go. The Satellite internet is one such thing. The satellite internet in Exeter, New Hampshire, the wildblue satellite has taken the world by storm.

It has been the talk of my town. I live in a rural area. Normally, by the time I try to get the internet connection through my dial up connection, two things happen : one, I lose patience trying to connect to the net. Two, I would have lost taking so many of the calls which would have come by that time. That has been the problem with the dial up.

That is exactly what the latest satellite internet providers have really tackled. Of this pack the wild blue seems to be the pick of the lot. It has become the talk of the place. Lots of people are signing up for it. They are all delighted by it, including myself. It gives you internet at a speed which is about 30 times faster than the dieal up connection that people typically have. Check it out and enjoy life!

Germany doles out Tax Sops

Germany’s upper house of parliament has approved Chancellor Merkel’s tax relief plans aimed at helping the economy.

After a striking a deal late on Thursday, coalition partners agreed to the bill, which will cost the state about 8.5bn euros ($12.2bn; £7.5bn).

Some of the regional states had threatened to block the plans saying they could not afford them.

The idea is to boost domestic demand by lowering tax rates for firms as well as introducing tax breaks for families.

The proposals will also reduce the tax on hotel sales.

The BBC’s Tristana Moore in Berlin said the plans, which will come into effect in January next year, were controversial given the country’s widening budget deficit. The deficit is set to reach a record 85bn euros in 2010.

The German economy emerged from recession in the second quarter of this year.

China has agreed to end subsidies that have been behind a dispute with the US at the World Trade Organization.

China is ending subsidies that are part of its “Famous Export Brand” and “China World Top Brand” programmes, said the Office of the US Trade Representative.

Businesses in those programmes had been guaranteed government preferences, including what Washington said was financial support tied to exports.

England World Cup Bid attracts Loan

The UK government is to give a £2.5m loan to back England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup.

Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said the money would “help the campaign team make the case for a fantastic World Cup in England in 2018″.

The money will be paid back along with a share of the profits from the tournament if the Football Association’s (FA) bid wins.

This week, the government also signed off on £300m of financial guarantees.

England 2018 chief executive Andy Anson said earlier this month that £15.5m as a “base budget” had been earmarked for the bid, which included FA and commercial money.

Countries will find out who won with their bid to host the World Cup in December 2010.

In October, Brazil was confirmed as the host nation of the 2014 World Cup.
