Russian Warning

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said a new arms race could begin in the next decade if Nato and Moscow fail to agree on a joint missile shield.

In his annual speech to the nation, he said he had advocated a “fully fledged joint mechanism of co-operation” at a recent Nato-Russia summit.

On domestic issues, Mr Medvedev argued for families of three children or more to stem Russia’s population decline.

Confounding expectations, he did not talk about his own political future.

With less than two years to the next presidential ballot, many believe his powerful predecessor, Vladimir Putin, will seek to return to the Kremlin in his place.

US tax cuts may be extended for all

It is politics time in US and the Republicans are pushing for extending the Bush tax cuts to every class including the elite, while the Democrats are interested in withdrawing the tax breaks for the elite, and want to extent only for the poor and middle class.
But given the political implications, it would be win win for every class few weeks down the line, as even the Democrats would be interested in seeing the extension of the scheme for everybody, including the elite, though they would not like to say it openly.
Democrats have seen their popularity rating crash to all time lows, and they would not like to risk losing the votes of the elite by withdrawing the tax benefit. But they are interested in winning back the votes of masses, hence they are trying to indicate that they are not interested in the elite class.

Obama signs new sanctions against Iran

The Obama administration promised to show a friendly hand with Iran at the time of taking over one and a half years back, but today it is also doing exactly what the earlier US administrations were doing.
Despite special efforts by the Obama administration, the Iranian regime is continuing to pursue dangerous nuclear operations in a clandestine manner, and it is already costing the US and NATO forces heavily in Iraq / Afghanistan / Pakistan.
So the US government has today signed up another round of special sanctions against Iran and forbids access to US markets for any company doing business with Iran.
Whether this would be helping in bringing Iran to the negotiation table is a billion dollars question.

Why Obama may lose his popularity further ?

Obama’s popularity rating hit a new low of 48% last month in the wake of his poor handling of the gulf of Mexico oil spill aftermath. Now with no money in the coffers, and the unemployment ruling at over 9.5% , he is left with no choice but only hope for God’s help.
Also complicating his problem is the reluctance of China in appreciating it’s currency. It is not expecting to raise it beyond a few basis points fearing exports crash. Also stronger countries like Germany and France are now talking of cutting down on their lavish spending style, which can pull down the weak US exports further.
And on the politics front, the Iran and Afghanistan problems are intact and are only growing bigger in size. So as of now, nothing is going right for the US President, and he is only likely to see further dip in popularity rating in the coming months.
