A radiation powerful than Xrays

Professor of Texas University, Alexey Belyanin has come out with terahertz. Terahertz radiation or THZ or t- rays are in the electromagnetic spectrum. THZ rays lay in-between microwave radiation and infrared radiation. The T-rays are more penetrating than x -rays and have no side effects. T-rays cameras can help us scan anything including suitcase, closed box and inside humans.

The capacity of t-rays to penetrate into opaque materials can make us unknown things visible. Unfortunately t-rays are difficult to produce due to unavailability of resources. The THZ technology application can be used in medicine, chemistry and other studies.

We can recycle plastic polythene covers into batteries

A chemist named Vilas Ganpat Pol from Illinois has come out with a technique of converting low or high density polyethylene into multiwalled carbon nanotubes.

These Nanotubes are used to manufacture lithium-ion batteries.

The process involved is to cook the polythene around 700degree C by using cobalt acetate as a catalyst for 2 hours then the cooked mixture is cooled slowly.

Recycling in this ‘up cycling’ method is the cheapest method.

The lithium-ion batteries got from this nanotubes work nicely when compared to the commercial nanotubes.

Atlas discovered by Marine animals

A group of 25 scientists formed into a team for the past 10 years were helped by National Research Council of Argentina (CONICET) to come out with an comprehensive atlas of the Patagonian sea. American marine ecosystem is globally very important but very difficult to understand.

15 species of Marine animals such as penguins, sea lion albatrosses were used to form this wonderful atlas. Satellite transmitters were fitted on the marine animals and around thousand recordings of individual uplinks were made and to get the most accurate maps of the Patagonian sea .

The Patagonian sea has remarkable importance in affecting the climate, economic change and marine biodiversity. The researches feel that this atlas will be helpful for conservation of the Patagonian Sea, protection of the marine life.

Atlas of the Patagonian Sea: Species and Spaces are available in stores now.

Let us make Chimps talk

Chimps cannot talk because of the genetic code. The genetic code in humans and chimps differ in their genes function. Chimpanzees share most of their DNA with their human brothers. Chimps and humans shared percentage range from 95 percent 98.5 to percent.
Dan Geschwind, a professor at King’s College London, found out that a gene called FOXP2. FOXP2 is the gene which looks similar in chimps and human. FOXP2 plays an important role in human speech. 4 million to 7 million years ago FOXP2 looked similar in many animals right up to the time the human lineage split off from the chimpanzee.

FOXP2 actually means that it affects the activity of other genes. Humans and chimp brain tissues were analyzed of what FOXP2 actually does?

FOXP2 actually produced two amino acids extra as produced by the gene of the chimp variations in brain structure that may be involved in human language. Research shows that the amino-acid composition of human FOXP2 changed rapidly around the same time that language emerged in modern humans.

Global Warming

A new study has determined that about half of 36 fish stocks in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean, have been shifting northwards thanks to warming waters. The study was conducted by researchers from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Historic ocean temperature and long term processes like the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and the North Atlantic Oscillation dating back to 1850 were also analyzed to put temperature data into context. During the past 40 years many familiar species have been moving into cooler waters of North.
They seem to be adapting to change and finding places where their chances of survival is greater.

ESA satellite blasts off

The European Space Agency has successfully launched a satellite today morning , which will track the water level in the soils and also the quantum of salts in the oceans. The study is expected to help the scientists to help in better weather forecasting apart from identifying the odd events like floods, well in advance.
The European Space Agency is planning to send a series of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellites over the next few years to strengthen the research efforts.

New Global Warming Targets

New Global warming targets are being set now. The Leaders of the G8 leading industrial countries have agreed to try to limit global warming to just 2C (3.6F) above pre-industrial levels by 2050. The summit, which happened in the Italian city of L’Aquila, also set tough new targets for carbon emissions considered necessary to achieve the goal. The Developed nations are to cut carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, to allow a global 50% reduction by the same date. But the only problem is that all these are mere wish statements. As per the analysts, there is no indication of how the targets, or costs, will be met. So, how will they reach the target? Developed nations have been criticised for ducking interim goals, and difficult talks still lie ahead as negotiators try to firm up the ambitious goals.

You can Forecast the Weather Yourself : UK’s initiative

Now, you can forecast the weather all by yourself. This is not a joke and this is very serious. This comes as a fallout of the UK government’s initiative to map the climate and its impact on the land of England. It is going to be released by the government later this year. The report will predict how temperature and rainfall are likely to change at regional and local scales.

The predictions are scary. As per the scientists the winters are going to be wetter especially in north and the summers are going to be drier, particularly in south. The projected impacts are “worse than the government had feared,” according to a source familiar with the project. The government thinks that the UK Climate Projections 2009 report (UKCP09) will allow citizens, local authorities and businesses to plan better for future decades. This allows people to use an online “weather generator”, through which they will be able to see what the project forecasts for their postcode at different points in the future, effectively predicting the weather in their area all by themselves.

John Mitchell, director of climate science at the UK Met Office, which has taken charge of the computer modelling of climate used in the report, said that “This is the most comprehensive set of probabilistic climate projections at the regional scale compiled anywhere in the world,”
